Life after death
There are many ideas about what happens when you die. The Bible teaching is straightforward but most churches teach something different. A proper understanding of what happens after death gives hope for the future and peace now.
The resurrection of Jesus
Jesus died and then rose from the dead. He can say what happens because he has been there.
Bible teaching about life after death
The Bible is very clear about what happens when you die. Throughout it speaks of death as a sleep; awakening only comes with the return of Jesus to set up God's kingdom.
The hope of life
Believers have a promise of eternal life in a perfect world when Jesus returns.
The day of judgement
When Jesus returns he will judge. Entry in to God's kingdom is not automatic. However Jesus is a righteous and fair judge and will show God's mercy.
Not everyone will be raised from the dead.
The hope of eternal life is through resurrection from the dead. Just as Jesus Christ was raised from the dead, so we too can have a hope of a physical resurrection to eternal life. When we are raised from the dead we will be judged by Jesus, and will either be destroyed for ever or will be given eternal life in the Kingdom of God.
At death we know nothing until we are raised at the Day of Judgement.
Our resurrection will be physical, like that of Jesus.
On resurrection we will be judged. If we are found faithful we will receive eternal life in God’s kingdom; if we are not found faithful we will be destroyed.
