Miracles and the Power of God

Many miracles are recorded in the Bible. However, nothing like these miracles appear in the present day. Occasionally there are people who claim to perform miracles, but on investigation these are somewhat less than impressive.

This study is about the miracles that Jesus and the disciples did and why we cannot do the same things.

The Miracles of Jesus

The New Testament contains records of events where Jesus performed great miracles. He healed the incurably sick and he even raised the dead.

The Miracles of the Apostles

After Pentecost the Apostles also performed significant miracles, some of which are recorded in the Acts of the Apostles.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit

The Apostles and some of the early Christians were given the Holy Spirit and were able to do miracles.

The Holy Spirit in the life of the believer.

Does the Holy Spirit make you a better person? Many would claim this but the Bible teaches something quite different.

Testing the Spirits

How can you decide whether someone has the Holy Spirit? The Bible gives a definitive test.

Summary

  1. The Bible makes it very clear that in the past God has produced great miracles. These include the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead. There is extremely strong evidence for the resurrection of Jesus and there are detailed accounts of other miracles.

  2. In the past God gave gifts of the Holy Spirit to the Apostles and other followers of Jesus; these allowed them to work miracles, to heal, to predict the future and to speak in foreign languages, among other things. These gifts have now come to an end and we should not expect to see anyone with them in the present, before the return of Jesus.

  3. It is important to test those who claim to have a message from God, especially if that claim is accompanied by a claim to work miracles. The test given by Scripture involves not only the working of miracles, but that their teaching should agree with that of the Bible.
