2. Introducing Jesus Christ

Jesus Christ is the key figure in Christianity, the founder of the faith whose teaching is at the centre of the Gospel and whose death and resurrection bring salvation to mankind.

He was born in Bethlehem, a small town just south of Jerusalem, but he grew up in the remote village of Nazareth in Galilee. His family consisted of his mother Mary, her husband and several brothers and sisters ( Matthew 13:55,56 ). At about the age of 30, Jesus began a mission of teaching and healing, travelling from town to town and proclaiming the Kingdom of God. This mission was mainly carried out in the towns of Galilee, but from time to time Jesus travelled to Jerusalem for Jewish festivals, and he taught and healed in Jerusalem on those occasions.

After a period of slightly longer than three years, Jesus was arrested in Jerusalem and was put to death by crucifixion. He was buried in a tomb just outside Jerusalem. On the third day after, he was raised to life and later ascended to heaven with the promise to return at the day of judgement.

The Birth of Jesus

The birth of Jesus was the result of a miracle. He had no human father; his only real father was God. According to Luke 1:35, this is why he is called the Son of God.

Jesus is not God

The Bible consistently tells us that Jesus is the Son of God, but it never describes him as God. Indeed, the Bible gives a number of powerful reasons for believing that Jesus is not God. The Bible consistently makes a distinction between Jesus and God. It describes Jesus as having been sent by God ( eg. John 17:3 ), as having been raised from the dead by God ( Romans 10:9 ) and as having a God himself ( John 20:17 ). The idea that Jesus is God doesn’t appear in Christianity until more than a century after the resurrection.

Jesus Shows What God is Like

However, the Bible also explains that Jesus shows us what God is like. No-one has seen God, but God has revealed himself to us through other beings who are not God ( Hebrews 1:1-4 ). Jesus, the Son of God, represents God in a more complete way than any other entity. To understand God it is essential to come to him through Jesus Christ.
